The United States has the highest documented incarceration rate in the world. At year-end 2011 it was 743 adults incarcerated per 100,000 population. According to the U.S Bureau of Justice Statistics,  2,266,800 adults were incarcerated in U.S. federal and state prisons, and county jails at year-end 2010 — about .7% of adults in the U.S. resident population. Additionally, 4,933,667 adults at year-end 2011 were on probation or on parole.

Dr. Patricia Franklin-Therrell, writing fiction under the pseudonym Patricia Cage, has extensive first-hand knowledge of life behind bars. She taught adult male inmates inside a maximum security prison for over twenty years. Her debut novel, Justice for #997543, was inspired by the inmates she worked with and the radical changes that need to take place within our broken criminal justice system.
